Local Hubs

Student Hubs is lead by students at the six Hub universities: Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Southampton and Wawick. To find out more about the local Hubs' teams, click here

Staff teams

We have a staff support team who work across the whole network and in local Hubs. Get to know the national team better below, and visit the local Hubs to meet their staff support teams.

Executive Director - Adam O'Boyle

Adam is a Founder and the Executive Director of Student Hubs as well as the Founder and Executive Director of Hub Commercial Ventures CIC . He splits his time between the two organisations and is responsible for the overall strategic and financial health of both the social enterprise and charity. He graduated from St John's College, Oxford, in 2009 with a 1st class degree in Modern History and Economics having in 2007 taken a sabbatical year from his degree to found the Oxford Hub. During this time he also worked as a part-time analyst for New Philanthropy Capital where he co-authored a research report entitled: ‘Critical masses: Social campaigning, a guide for donors and funders’. Adam is a member of the NCVO Leadership 20:20 group and a trustee of Students Supporting Street Kids.

Chief Operating Officer - Sara Fernandez

Sara completed her degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Merton College, Oxford in 2009.  After graduation she joined Student Hubs, and currently oversees the operations of the charity and the development of the network of Hubs across the UK. Sara is interested in social education and works with United World Colleges to encourage more social action among young people. She has also worked as part of the founding team of the Hub Madrid and is a trustee of Student Run Self Help, a charity helping students with eating disorders. In her spare time she studies for a second degree in Social Education and volunteers at the East Oxford farmers market. 

Communications Director - Rachel Stephenson

Rachel Stephenson completed her degree in French & Linguistics with 1st class honours from St. John’s College, Oxford in 2009. After co-founding the Oxford Hub in 2007, Rachel took up a teaching post in France for her year abroad before working at Oxfam GB in the Fundraising Partnerships division where her research into European donors contributed to a €500,000 grant. After returning to her studies, Rachel continued to act as a Trustee for Student Hubs and is now working full time for the organisation. Rachel found her charity feet working for Students Supporting Street Kids, coordinating Change for Children Week in Oxford in 2007 and participating in a project surveying tourist sites in London and Paris for people with mobility and visual impairments.

Funding and Development Manager - Anna Machin

Anna graduated from Trinity Hall College, Cambridge in 2010 with a degree in Social and Political Sciences. During her time at university, she volunteered with Save the Children and Students in Free Enterprise, spending vacations working with grassroots NGOs in India and Kenya. After graduation, Anna spent time as an intern with the Maltese Labour Party and award-winning social business Enabling Enterprise. Anna now works on Student Hubs' fundraising, Cambridge Hub projects and social enterprise activities.

National Support Officer - Alice Thornton

Alice Thornton became involved in Oxford Hub as a first year student at Oxford back in 2009. She remained involved with the committee right through until completing her degree, in History, in 2011, spending most of her time working on expanding and improving community volunteering projects for students in the city. She has had experience working with Comic Relief and the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, as well as being a self-confessed serial volunteer for a number of small organisations.

Operations Officer - Elena Lynch

Elena completed a degree in French and German at Oxford. During her time at university Elena re-launched the Target Schools Access Scheme and ran Wadham College's Arts Week Festival. She was also involved in student politics and was Access and Admissions Officer for the university student's union and Access and Academic Affairs for the Wadham College's student's union. On her year abroad Elena studied philosophy and volunteered with a French children's tutoring organisation in Bordeaux. In Germany she interned in the Bundestag for German Green Party MP Juergen Trittin. Before joining Student Hubs she also completed an Ethical Internship with our 2011 cohort, working for Hub Islington as a host for 6 weeks.

For the first time in 2011, Student Hubs recruited five National Programmes Coordinators who have now taken up residence at the 'Hub House', located next door to the Student Hubs central office in Oxford.
